Madeline “Maddie” Finch was a vibrant 16-year-old, a straight-A student, cheerleader, devoted Cubs fan, animal lover and a young woman known for her kindness and compassion. She dreamed of helping others, often talking about becoming a nurse, though her family suspected her love of animals might eventually lead her to veterinary medicine.
On May 7, 2017, just hours after celebrating her junior prom, Maddie was driving to her father’s home when she fell asleep at the wheel. Her vehicle crossed the median and collided with a semi-truck. She died instantly. Investigators determined that Maddie was not texting, impaired or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The cause was simple and heartbreaking: she was driving while tired.
For Maddie’s stepfather, Jim Allmon, the tragedy was especially unimaginable. As Chief Deputy Coroner for Sangamon County, he had spent years delivering devastating news to grieving families. Yet nothing could prepare him for learning that the victim of the crash was his own daughter.
In the midst of overwhelming grief, Jim remembered the importance of donation through his work with Gift of Hope. Knowing there might still be an opportunity for Maddie to help others, he contacted Gift of Hope and then approached his wife, Courtney, about donation.
Despite their heartbreak, the answer came without hesitation. Together, they chose to honor Maddie’s generous spirit through tissue donation.
Maddie’s gifts went on to save and heal lives far beyond what her family could have imagined. Through her donation, bone and tendon grafts and a pulmonary valve helped patients across the United States and around the world, including recipients in Pennsylvania, Singapore, South Korea and Jordan. Her gift became a source of healing for many individuals and families she would never meet.
During Maddie’s funeral service, a severe storm darkened the skies over the church. Rain, hail and reports of a nearby tornado created an atmosphere that mirrored the family’s grief. But as the service drew to a close and Maddie’s favorite song began to play, the storm suddenly cleared. Sunshine broke through the clouds, and a double rainbow appeared over the church.
For Maddie’s family, it felt like a sign of hope amid unimaginable loss.
“We all stood as a family and walked over to the windows,” Jim recalled. “After that threatening darkness, it was so bright.”
In the years since, Maddie’s family has continued to honor her legacy. They established the Maddie Finch Memorial Scholarship Fund to support senior cheerleaders at New Berlin High School and have shared her story throughout their community. Jim also uses Maddie’s experience to educate students and parents about the dangers of driving while tired, ensuring her story continues to protect others.
Maddie’s death forever changed those who loved her. Yet through the decision to donate, her family found a light in their darkest moments. Her gifts continue to heal others, and her legacy lives on through every life touched by donation.
As Jim often shares, donation became that one beacon of hope during an otherwise devastating time, transforming tragedy into healing and ensuring that Maddie’s caring spirit continues to make a difference in the world every day.
