National Organ & Tissue Donation Organization & Partners

America’s Blood Centers is the national association of independent, community blood centers dedicated to providing a safe and available blood supply for every patient in need.

AABB is an international, not-for-profit Association representing individuals and institutions involved in the fields of transfusion medicine and biotherapies.

The American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) is a professional, non-profit, scientific and educational organization. AATB is the premier standard setting body promoting the safety and use of donated human tissue. The overwhelming majority of the human tissue distributed for transplant comes from AATB-accredited tissue banks.

The American Diabetes Association is a network of more than 565,000 volunteers, their families and caregivers, a professional society of nearly 12,000 health care professionals, as well as nearly 350 staff members.

The American Heart Association (AHA) is a nonprofit organization in the United States that funds cardiovascular medical research, educates consumers on healthy living and fosters appropriate cardiac care in an effort to reduce disability and deaths caused by cardiovascular disease and stroke.

The American Liver Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit with dedicated staff and national board of directors who bring a range of medical expertise. ALF’s mission is to promote education, advocacy, support services and research for the prevention, treatment and cure of liver disease.

The American Lung Association is the leading organization working to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through education, advocacy and research.

AOPO is saving and improving lives through organ, eye, and tissue donation, by leading the nation’s organ donation process through innovation, advocacy, and education. AOPO advances organ donation and transplantation by driving continual improvement of the donation process, collaborating with stakeholders and sharing best practices with their OPO members.

The mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with CF the opportunity to lead long, fulfilling lives by funding research and drug development, partnering with the CF community, and advancing high-quality, specialized care.

Donate Life America is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization leading its national partners and Donate Life State Teams to increase the number of donated organs, eyes and tissues available to save and heal lives through transplantation while developing a culture where donation is embraced as a fundamental human responsibility. 

Founded in 1961, the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA), is the world’s oldest transplant association and is the nationally-recognized accrediting and standards setting body for eye banks. 

The National Kidney Foundation is revolutionizing the fight to save lives by eliminating preventable kidney disease, accelerating innovation for the dignity of the patient experience, and dismantling structural inequities in kidney care, dialysis, and transplantation.

The Respiratory Health Association has been a local public health leader since 1906. At that time, tuberculosis was a prominent health threat in the community. As health practices and treatments, medicines, and environmental factors have evolved, so has RHA. Today they address asthma, COPD, lung cancer, tobacco control and air quality with a comprehensive approach. 

UNOS is a nonprofit organization with decades of experience in helping save lives through research, technology, innovation and education. Since 1986, UNOS has managed the nation’s Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) under contract with the federal government.

Advance Directives

You have the right to make decisions about the health care you get now and in the future. An advance directive is a written statement you prepare that expresses how you want medical decisions made in the future should you not be able to make them yourself. 

Illinois Department of Public Health

The Illinois Department of Public Health is an advocate for and partner with the people of Illinois to re-envision health policy and promote health equity, prevent and protect against disease and injury, and prepare for health emergencies. 

Illinois State Medical Society

The Illinois State Medical Society aims to educate and advocate for, and support the health and wellbeing of the people of Illinois and the physicians who care for them. ISMS unites all Illinois physicians, regardless of specialty and practice environment, to improve the practice of medicine in Illinois.

Local Organ & Tissue Donation Partners

Eversight is a global nonprofit eye bank with a mission to restore sight and prevent blindness through the healing power of donation, transplantation and research.

The Life Goes On program employs regional coordinators who coordinate events and donor registry drives throughout the state. The director of the program oversees all efforts aimed at promoting organ/tissue donation. Illinois’ Organ/Tissue donor registry is a program of the office of the Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias.

LifeSource is a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives through organ, eye and tissue donation in the Upper Midwest.

Mid-America Transplant helps donor families through moments of grief and loss, supporting transplant patients, and facilitate safe, reliable donations for transplant.

The Rock River Valley Blood Center, in partnership with the communities that it serves (14 area hospitals), is dedicated to providing safe, high-value blood products and services to people in need.

Saving Sight is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to change lives by saving sight. Founded in 1960, Saving Sight has grown to become one of the nation’s leading eye banks and is focused on providing innovative solutions to its clinical partners. Headquartered in Kansas City, Mo., Saving Sight facilitates eye donation in Missouri, Kansas and Illinois, impacting the lives of those both near and far through transplantation.

Illinois Transplant Programs

The Organ Transplant Surgery Program‘s mission at Advocate Health Care is to restore quality of life and provide hope to adult patients with end-stage heart, kidney or lung failure.

Lurie Children’s (formerly Children’s Memorial Hospital) performed its first transplant in 1964 and has remained a leader in transplant surgery and advanced hepatobiliary (related to liver, gallbladder or bile ducts) surgery ever since. They are one of only eleven children’s hospitals nationwide to have performed more than 1,000 solid organ transplants.

Loyola Medicine provides expert care for heart, lung, kidney, liver, pancreas and bone marrow and stem cell transplants, including multi-organ transplants.
