Olivia “Livi” Sonetz was unforgettable. A senior at Normal Community West High School, she was known for her boundless energy, fearless spirit, infectious smile and deep compassion for others. Whether on the softball field, with friends and family, or helping those around her, Livi gave everything she had and inspired everyone she met. Tragically, Livi died following an automobile accident on March 6, leaving her family and community heartbroken.
Despite their overwhelming grief, Livi’s parents, Laura and
Paul, made the courageous decision to authorize organ and tissue donation on
their daughter’s behalf. As Laura explained, “Livi would want to continue
helping people,” making the decision both difficult and meaningful. The
donation process also gave family and friends precious additional time to be
with Livi and say goodbye.
Livi’s gifts transformed lives. Through organ donation, she
saved three people: a woman in her 60s
who received her kidney and liver, a man in his 60s who received her heart and
a man in his 40s who received her lungs. Her tissue donations have helped many
others heal and recover, extending her impact far beyond her community.
A gifted athlete, Livi was preparing to attend Heartland
Community College and continue playing softball alongside her sister, Ellie.
Her natural athletic ability and love for competition set her apart. One
memorable example came during the Illinois High School Association state
softball finals, when she returned to the game after suffering a severe injury
to her front teeth. Determined to help her team, she recorded a hit, made a
defensive play and stole a base. Her toughness and commitment became legendary
among teammates, coaches, and fans.
Yet those who knew Livi say her greatest strength was her
heart. She lifted people up and approached life with enthusiasm and kindness.
Her father described her as fearless with a heart “the size of a pumpkin,”
while others remembered the joy she brought to everything she did.
Before her donation, Paul shared a message with the
healthcare team caring for Livi, telling them they were handling “high-octane
parts” from a one-of-a-kind person. The medical team honored her with applause,
a fitting tribute to someone who left such a powerful impression on everyone
she encountered.
Today, Livi’s legacy lives on through the lives she saved,
the people she helped heal and the countless family members, friends,
teammates, and community members she inspired. Through the gift of donation,
her generosity, strength, and passion for life continue to make an indelible
mark on the world.
