Elias Kim’s presence was impossible to ignore. He brought curiosity and unmistakable energy into every space he entered. Whether in a classroom, on a skateboard, or behind a camera lens, Elias had a way of immersing himself completely while at the same time drawing others in along with him.
A junior at Lane Tech High School in Chicago, Elias was known for his sharp mind and relentless determination. He approached learning like a competition, pushing himself to understand things deeply and completely. Physics was his favorite subject and he tackled it with confidence and humor, often insisting it was “easy.” Not surprisingly, math followed closely behind. For Elias it was not just as an academic strength, but something he genuinely loved to explore on his own time.
But Elias was far more than his grades.
He had a distinct eye for design, balance and beauty that showed up in everything he touched. Photography was a powerful outlet for that perspective. Through Fresh Lens Chicago, he found community, mentorship and a creative voice that resonated. His work stood out, often recognized and celebrated, and those around him could see he was just beginning to understand the depth of his own potential.
Elias also had a remarkable way of connecting with people. Friends and classmates described him as someone who made them feel seen and valued. He listened, noticed small details and showed up for people in ways that mattered. His presence left an impression that stayed with you.
When Elias decided to pursue something, he committed fully. One summer, he wanted to become a soccer player, so he practiced every day until he succeeded. Later, he turned to boxing, showing up week after week to the gym with determination and grit. Effort never intimidated him. Instead he embraced it.
Eventually, Elias found skateboarding, and with it, a sense of belonging. It became his favorite form of expression and his way of moving through the city. He later passed that passion along by teaching younger kids, sharing not only skill but confidence.
This same drive shaped everything he did. From solving complex Rubik’s cubes to mastering intricate origami designs, Elias was drawn to challenges that required focus, patience, and creativity. Completing a task was not enough. He wanted to understand it fully.
That determination, often described as stubbornness, was one of his defining traits. It pushed him to excel, to question, to challenge limits and at times, to take risks. It was both a strength and a vulnerability, inseparable from who he was.
On Thanksgiving night in 2025, Elias’s life was tragically cut short after a car crash on Lake Shore Drive. Amid overwhelming grief, his family was faced with a decision no one expects to make for their child. Though Elias had once brushed off the idea of organ donation, his family believed that, at heart, he would have wanted to help others.
Choosing donation became a source of hope.
In a moment defined by loss, it offered something enduring—the chance for Elias to continue giving, to continue making a difference. Through organ and tissue donation, his life extends beyond what was lost, reaching into the lives of others in ways that are both profound and lasting.
In the wake of his passing, the impact of his life became even more visible. It was reflected in the voices of friends, teachers, artists and fellow skateboarders who shared how deeply he had influenced them.
Elias’s story is one of talent, determination, creativity, and connection. It is also a story of generosity, one that did not end with his passing.
