Ricky’s Lasting Gift of Hope

Ricky Barcenas Lorenzo was a young man with big dreams and an even bigger heart. From an early age, Ricky set goals for himself and worked tirelessly to achieve them. He talked about attending college and becoming an agricultural engineer, a future he took on with excitement and purpose. Those who knew Ricky best understood that when he envisioned his future, it was always grounded in determination, kindness, and a genuine desire to help others.

Ricky was a hard worker and a devoted student. He balanced school, work and family responsibilities with maturity well beyond his years. At Buffalo Grove High School, Ricky was an Honor Roll student with a 3.9 GPA. He participated on the JV soccer team and the co-ed cheerleading team, with plans to make varsity his senior year on both teams. Outside of school, Ricky worked at Portillo’s, earning the respect and admiration of everyone he met. Wherever he went, Ricky carried a smile and an openness that made people feel seen and valued.

As the oldest of three brothers, Ricky took this leadership role seriously. Growing up with his mother, Brenda, who became a mom at just 16 years old, Ricky never hesitated to step up. The two grew up together, forming a bond rooted in love, trust, and mutual support. Ricky helped care for his younger brothers while his mom worked and always made sure she wasn’t struggling. He was responsible at home, dedicated at work and still found time to enjoy what he loved most—dancing and playing soccer.

Ricky’s passion for soccer began when he was just six years old. It remained a constant in his life, teaching him discipline, teamwork and perseverance. These same qualities helped him earn a place in the College Bound Opportunities (CBO) program at school, where he received guidance and financial support toward college. He earned this achievement through focus and effort, and one that made his family incredibly proud.

Not long before tragedy struck, Ricky and his mom went to get his driver’s license. During that visit, the topic of organ donation came up. When asked how he felt about being an organ donor, Ricky responded calmly and without hesitation. He told his mom that if his time ever came, he would want to help others live and have a happy life. In that moment, Brenda saw clearly the depth of her son’s compassion.

When Ricky passed away unexpectedly, Brenda was faced with an impossible decision. She knew what Ricky wanted, but that didn’t make the choice any easier. But just as Ricky had been certain, so too was his mother that this was his wish.

Through tissue donation, Ricky was able to help others. He donated bone and tissue that helped others heal and live a pain-free life. Though Brenda has not yet met the people her son helped, she carries comfort knowing that part of Ricky lives on. His generosity has given families hope, healing, and quality time together.

Ricky’s decision has also inspired others. Family members who once felt unsure about donation now see it differently. His story changed hearts and perspectives, encouraging loved ones to register and continue his legacy of giving.

Today, Brenda walks with pride, knowing her son made the right choice. Though her loss is immeasurable, there is comfort in knowing Ricky’s legacy lives on not just in cherished memories, but in the lives he touched through donation.
